ABOUT SMOOTH RUNNING PERUVIANS

About me
My whole riding life has been in the quest for the ultimate trekking/pleasure horse. I have owned thoroughbreds, quarter horses, a Gisborne-bred, an arab cross, appaloosas and various other crossbreds. They've all been wonderful horses in their own ways. BUT....my whole world changed when I had one short ride on the first Peruvian Horse stallion in New Zealand, Tesaro Halado. WOW!! I thought, "that is what I've been looking for my whole riding life. When I can afford it I will have one."
It was not only the incredible smoothness of the ride, it was also the gentle, willing and patient temperament coupled with fire and exuberance (forward but not fizzy) that so impressed me and my friends. This was a stallion in his prime - 7 at the time - in the height of breeding season, very green and rarely ridden. We pulled him out from the mares, took turns climbing on and rode him bareback in a halter and lead.
That is what got me started on my own stud. Thank you Sharon for bring him into the country.
In 2005 I imported a 4yr old black mare, FF Ayacuchana, and a 10-month old cremello colt, FF Regalo de Oro. They both came from Fandango Farms in California, USA.
About the stud
We had our first foal (my first foal ever!) out of Chana by Tesaro, 21st Nov 06, a filly. We named her SRNZ Alondra (meaning Skylark). She is the first purebred Peruvian Horse born in New Zealand. Nothing bothers this little girl. She was born wanting to know humans and obliges in everything we ask of her with a no fuss attitude.
In 2007 we had a lovely first cross filly by Tesaro out of Kristy a Standardbred mare (by Road Machine). My daughter Emily has named her Estrella Lisa (Smooth Star). She was born 8th Jan 07. She's quite a character and appears to have the "gait".
We had four lovely foals here at the stud in 2008: part-bred pinto colt SRNZ Hypnotize (by Regalo out of Filly, a 7/8 Arab-pinto cross), part-bred buckskin colt SRNZ El Solano (by Regalo out of our Standardbred mare Kristy), purebred palomino filly SRNZ Armisticia (by Regalo out of FF Ayacuchana) and purebred buckskin filly SRNZ Amorosa (by Regalo out of Suavecita de RT).
Spring/summer 2009/10 was another successful and satisfying breeding season. We had one each, a boy and a girl, out of our purebred mares: SRNZ Valiente, a handsome colt with lots of chrome, and SRNZ Saliente, a special smoky black pearl filly. Two lovely part-breds by Regalo, Alegro and Arena, were born to outside mares. See the Photo Gallery for photos of the 2009/10 season's foals.
Our mares weren't bred over the 2010/11 breeding season to give both them and us a break, have time to catch our collective breaths and build on what we've achieved so far. We are so pleased with the results!
We're pleased to announce a Peruvian Horse seminar by noted breeder Pamela Johnston of Canada to be held 26 - 30 May 2011 in Pukekohe, New Zealand. Click here for the seminar flyer. Contact us for further info about this exciting event!
